Arnim Zola was a Nazi scientist working for HYDRA. After Johann Schmidt's defeat, Zola joined S.H.I.E.L.D. at Camp Lehigh. He shared his history with his counterpart up until 1970 where Howard Stark ran into "Howard Potts" whilst looking for Zola.

Zola had already began work on transferring his consciousness into the computer.
After traveling back in time to Camp Lehigh in 1970 to steal the Tesseract, Tony Stark encountered his father, Howard Stark, who was searching for Zola, who was out of the room at the time. Unable to avoid Howard's notice, Tony told him that he had not seen Zola and lied about his identity.
