The Astral Plane is a metaphysical plane of existence that can only be accessed by mutants who possess psychic powers.

Oliver Bird was trapped in the Astral Plane somehow for years where he eventually met fellow mutant David Haller. David's father, Charles Xavier also fought Amahl Farouk on the Astral Plane years ago when David was only an infant and seemingly defeated him. However, Farouk survived and managed to latch on to David hiding inside his mind for much of his childhood.
Years later, when David as an adult gained better control of his powers would battle Farouk on the Astral Plane himself.

Mutants when in the Astral Plane are able to warp themselves and to an extent their enviorment into anything their hearts content. Shadow King and Legion were able to transform their entire forms into various objects; such as tanks and animals.
