Daniel Sousa was an agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
In an alternate timeline, while Sousa began to suspect that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by HYDRA, he had visited Area 51, where he encountered a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the future who were trying to prevent the Chronicoms from completely wiping S.H.I.E.L.D. from history so they could take Earth for themselves.
The team faked Sousa's demise to save him from HYDRA, and he joined them in their time-traveling mission to stop the Chronicoms, where he developed a relationship with Daisy Johnson. He eventually traveled to the original timeline where they managed to finally defeat the Chronicoms, and set off to explore the universe with Johnson as they traveled through space on Zephyr Three.
