"An Einstein-Rosen bridge, also known as a wormhole. In layman's terms, a portal to another universe opening below the ozone layer."
Phil Coulson to Nick Fury[src]

An Einstein-Rosen Bridge, more often known as a wormhole, is a portal for travel from one place to another, no matter the distance between them. In physics, a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that would be, fundamentally, a "shortcut" through spacetime.

The Tesseract/Space Stone, Bifrost Bridge and Stormbreaker are all capable of creating Einstein-Rosen Bridges.

History[]

Thor[]

"There was a wormhole in space and time beneath me. At that moment, I let go."
Loki[src]

Jane Foster was shown to be studying wormholes.

When Thor destroyed the Bifrost Bridge, the Bifrost's dimensional energy caused a wormhole to open in the abyss below that Loki allowed himself to fall into. The wormhole sent Loki to the Sanctuary where he met Thanos and the Other.[1]

Captain America: The First Avenger[]

"A lifetime ago, I too sought the stones. I even held one in my hand. But it cast me out, banished me here, guiding others to a treasure I can not possess."
Red Skull to Thanos[src]

After touching the Tesseract, Red Skull was sucked into a wormhole that sent him to Vormir.

The Avengers[]

Loki used the Tesseract to open a wormhole to transport himself from the Sanctuary to Earth.

As part of his invasion plans, Loki had a mind-controlled Erik Selvig build a device powered by the Tesseract to open a wormhole over New York City, allowing the Chitauri to invade. During the Battle of New York, Selvig was inadvertantly freed from mind control by Tony Stark and he aided Natasha Romanoff in closing the wormhole by using the Chitauri Scepter on his device. With the World Security Council having launched a nuclear missile at New York in an attempt to stop the invasion, Tony flew it through the wormhole and used it to destroy the Chitauri Command Center instead, stopping the Chitauri army. Tony barely made it back through the wormhole before it closed.

After the battle, Thor used a wormhole generated by the Tesseract to transport himself and Loki back to Asgard.

Thor: The Dark World[]

During the Convergence, wormholes connecting the Nine Realms aligned and allowed passage between them.

Avengers: Age of Ultron[]

After leaving Earth in a Quinjet, Hulk was transported to Sakaar by a wormhole.[2]

Thor: Ragnarok[]

"Sakaar. Surrounded by cosmic gateways, Sakaar lives on the edge of the known and unknown."
―Sakaar Computer[src]

The planet Sakaar was surrounded by a number of wormholes that dumped space waste on it. Thor, Bruce Banner and Valkyrie used the Devil's Anus to travel to Asgard in the Commodore. Loki and the Sakaaran gladiators later used the same wormhole to travel to Asgard in the Statesman.

Avengers: Infinity War[]

After taking the Tesseract, Thanos used wormholes generated by the Space Stone to travel around the universe quickly. After the Decimation, Thanos used a wormhole to escape to the Garden.

Avengers: Endgame[]

During the New York Time Heist, a variant of Loki used the confusion caused by the Hulk to grab the Tesseract and escape through a wormhole that it generated for him.

Loki[]

"Glorious Purpose"[]

After escaping from the Battle of New York, Loki emerged from the wormhole over the Mohave Desert where he was captured by the Time Variance Authority.
