The Free Mutants were a team of mutant freedom fighters led by Lucas Bishop.

Prior to X-Men: Days of Future Past[]
Formation[]
In 2018, after Lucas Bishop escaped from a Sentinel camp, he formed the Free Mutants in order to combat the Sentinels. At some point, former members of the X-Men, Iceman, Colossus and Kitty Pryde joined the Free Mutants.
X-Men: Days of Future Past[]
By the year 2023, the team was left down to Bishop, Blink, Warpath, Sunspot, Iceman, Colossus and Kitty Pryde, but they were allied with X-Men. Together they travelled the world to combat the Sentinels in secret. Whenever they were discovered, Kitty would send Bishop's consciousness back a few days and alert the others to prevent their fate.
Eventually the Free Mutants teamed up with Professor X, Magneto, Storm and Wolverine. They had Kitty send Wolverine's consciousness back to 1973 in order to prevent the Sentinels being activated. The team merged with the X-Men and defended the monastery from the Sentinel attack but eventually they were all slaughtered. However, the timeline was successfully altered and the Sentinels were never activated.
