Genetically Engineered Super Spiders are a race of genetically modified arachnids that were created in the Columbia University Genetics Lab.

History[]

Spider-Man[]

When Midtown High School seniors, consisting of Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn, Flash Thompson, and Liz Allan, went on a high school field trip to Columbia University's genetic labs, they were given a tour by a female scientist, who showed them the spiders that they had been doing genetic experiments on. Peter was allowed to take some pictures for the school paper, but got intentionally bumped by Flash and his friends, making his photo miss its intended shot, much to Harry's annoyance.

After Flash and his friends were told to leave Peter and Harry alone by their school teacher, Peter and Harry took a look around and admired the other experimented spiders. Peter told Harry that some spiders can change their colour to blend into their environment as a defense mechanism. Harry told this to Mary Jane after Peter encouraged him to go and talk to her. When the female scientist explained to the Midtown High students that they had combined the genetics from three spiders, into fifteen genetically engineered super spiders, Mary Jane noticed one of the spiders was missing from its case. The scientist believed her researchers were working on the spider, but unknown to her, that very spider had escaped from its container and was on a web high above the students.

When the students prepared to leave the lab, Peter asked Mary Jane if he could take pictures of her. She accepted and he took several pictures of her standing by the spider containers. Unknown to Peter, he was standing underneath the escaped genetically engineered super spider's web and it saw the opportunity to bite him. The spider silently scaled down its web and onto the back of Peter's right hand where it bit him after Mary Jane was called away by her friends. After being bitten, Peter shook off the spider and it quickly escaped before being seen, though Peter managed to see the spider escape and observed the bite on the back of his hand before being called over by the school teacher.

Unknown to Peter, that very spider that bit him had injected its mutated venom and DNA inside him, resulting in his genetic makeup being altered and physically enhancing his human attributes. This granted him the proportionate powers of a spider, which he soon used to become the masked crime-fighting superhero, Spider-Man.
