Obadiah Stane was an American businessman who was selling secrets to the Soviets and HYDRA and who was also responsible for the attempt on Howard and Maria Stark's life.

- "Okay, okay. Look, I traded the Russians some information on Stark's hunky-dory serum. A little tit-for-tat. And in return, you two idiots were supposed to kill the Starks! Now, I was supposed to be givin' a tear-filled eulogy about the fool right now, while they scrape his name off Stark Industries. But instead, Howard Stark's sitting eatin' tapioca in a hospital and I'm talking to you, Stupid Siegfried and Angry Roy!"

Under the alias of the Rook, Stane sold American secrets to the Soviet Union and HYDRA. As a part of this, Stane made a deal where he traded information Howard Stark's work on the Super Soldier Serum in exchange for the assassination of Howard and Maria Stark so that Stane could take over Stark Industries. However, the Red Guardian stopped the Winter Soldier from killing the couple, ruining Stane's plans.
The two later sought Stane out in a Las Vegas hotel room for help in escaping the country. Stane furiously admitted that he had set up Howard and Maria, while Alexei was dismayed to learn that the Rook was an American capitalist. Stane defended capitalism and his belief in it, and pointed out that the two men's bosses and comrades cared nothing for them. After confirming that they were alone and that no one else knew about their mission failure, Stane drew a hidden gun and tried to shoot Alexei. However, Bucky blocked the bullets with his metal arm and flung the Red Guardian's Shield into Stane, throwing him through the hotel room window to his death in the pool far below. Bucky apologized for murdering Stane, but Alexei was unconcerned as Stane wasn't a good guy.
As the two super soldiers made their escape, Bill Foster and Alisande Morales looked at Stane's body and realized that something wasn't adding up as Bucky and Alexei had spared the Starks, but not Stane.
