The Phoenix Force was an ancient cosmic entity that possessed Mutant Telepaths and Telekinetics since the days of Ancient Egypt. At some point, it chose Jean Grey as it's host, eventually causing the destruction of the Xavier Institute. It was removed by Emma Frost, Esme Cuckoo, Sophie Cuckoo, Phoebe Cuckoo, Celeste Cuckoo and Irma Cuckoo, before Sebastian Shaw betrayed Emma and had the Cuckoos absorb it. Were it not for Emma, Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean, the Phoenix would have ended up wiping out humanity.
