Robert "Bruce" Banner was a member of the Avengers who accidentally caused the Gamma War when he tried to rid himself of the Hulk creating the Apex in the process. When the Apex resurfaced ten years later, Bruce dosed himself with gamma radiation to be able to combat the Apex and became the Mega-Hulk.
