Behind the scenes[]
- Having previously portrayed the ill-fated Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, Gemma Chan didn't expect to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe until Kevin Feige approached her while promoting Crazy Rich Asians to play a new character in some further production, which ended up being Sersi in the film.
- Before Gemma Chan got cast as Sersi, Sofia Boutella, Marie Avgeropoulos, and Tatiana Maslany were considered for the role of Sersi. Maslany would eventually go on to play Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Director Chloe Zhao said she and Gemma Chan were interested in creating "a nuanced female superhero that is rarely seen in this genre". Zhao added that Chan "brought a beautiful sense of gentleness, compassion and vulnerability" to the character that would "invite viewers to rethink what it means to be heroic". Chan called Sersi "grounded... [and] a little bit of a free spirit".

- In the comics, Sersi is a member of the Eternals who became a member of the Avengers after Gilgamesh was wounded in battle. However, she eventually chose to become a socialite in New York.
