Talokanil used to be humans until they ingested a vibranium-laced plant from under the water. They lost the ability to breathe air but can breathe underwater and survive the depths of the ocean with incredible strength.

Talokanil used to be ordinary Mayan humans until they ingested a plant which transformed them into something more. Their skin turned blue and they could no longer breathe oxygen from the air, instead being able to absorb oxygen from the ocean. They became physically stronger and more durable, able to survive the depths of the ocean without the use of apparatus.
