- The Gifted's name is an indirect reference to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
- The series is influenced by Peter David's X-Men comic "X-Factor", where the X-Men formed an agency to investigate mutant-related incidents.
- This is the sixth "X-Men" TV series, but only the second one to be in live-action.
- Stephen Moyer who plays Reed in this X-Men television series is married to Anna Paquin who played Rogue in X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

- Polaris (Lorna Dane), Magneto's daughter, makes her live-action debut in this feature. She is the third of Magneto's children to appear in the X-Men films universe, after her half-brother Quicksilver (Peter Maximoff) in X-Men: Days of Future Past and her half-sister in Apocalypse. Though Quicksilver was also featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside his twin sister, Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it's unlikely we'll see their half-sister Polaris in the MCU because the film rights to that character belong to 20th Century Fox.
- In the comics Andreas and Andrea Von Strucker are the children of HYDRA Leader Baron Von Strucker who made an appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
- The character of Eclipse is an original character created for the show, he shares a codename with an incarnation of Sunspot in the Age of X timeline. Much like Eclipse, Sunspot has solar-based powers.
- The opening sequence displays a background resembling the bands often seen in gel electrophoresis, a technique often used in various types of genetic testing.
- Jamie Chung (Clarice Fong / Blink) provides the voice of GoGo Tomago in Big Hero 6 and Big Hero 6: The Series. Both The Gifted and Big Hero 6 are based on Marvel Comics properties.
