"I've had many names throughout my life. The Warrior King, Master Khan, the most dangerous man on Earth. For years, I thought that was all I was meant to be. But when I met their mother, everything changed."
―Xu Wenwu[src]

Xu Wenwu was the legendary leader of the Ten Rings, named after his ancient weapons.

Biography[]

All Hail the King[]

"He was a warrior king. He inspired generations of men through the Middle Ages; Perhaps even further back in time."
Jackson Norriss[src]

Jackson Norriss told Trevor Slattery that the real Mandarin wasn't happy that he appropriated his name and Slattery was to be taken to him to face his punishment.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings[]

Wenwu is the leader of the Ten Rings and father of Shang-Chi and Xialing.

Relationships[]

Appearances/Actors[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Tony Leung trained for the role of the Mandarin, even though Destin Daniel Cretton said he didn't need to do so since much of the action would involve the rings and computer-generated imagery.
  • Donnie Yen was considered for the role of the Wenwu/The Mandarin before Tony Leung was cast.
  • Tony Leung was given the script a month before filming.
  • This is legendary Hong Kong film actor Tony Leung's first role in an American film and his first English-speaking role, even though he has always spoken it fluently.
  • When he was cast, Tony Leung knew nothing about the Mandarin, and did not try to research the character. When Marvel Studios contacted him, they gave him full authority to make his own history of the character. He did not mind playing a villainous role (his first ever), but he sought to give the character depth and history: "I tried to explore the reasons that led him to become who he is. He's a man with history, who craves to be loved. He is a sociopath, a narcissist and a bigot, but he is also human and has a family."

Trivia[]

  • In the novelization of Iron Man, Raza claims he is wearing one of the Mandarin's rings. This may suggest a mark of leadership to all of the lieutenants in the Teta warrior king who goes as far back in recorded history as the Middle Ages. This would imply the Mandarin is either immortal or it is a title given to every leader of the Ten Rings.
  • Wenwu is named after the Chinese dual concept of wen (civil administration) and wu (martial administration).
