A Variant is a temporal variant of an individual created by an event that causes them to diverge from the original timeline in the Multiverse that they are a part of.
Description[]
Variants are created by a Nexus event that causes the original timeline to diverge in some way. Sylvie Laufeydottir referred to the creation of her timeline as being because "the universe wants to break free, so it manifests chaos. Like me being born the Goddess of Mischief." Another method of creating variants is the effects of time travel creating new branching timelines such as during the Avengers Time Heist.
While the Time Variance Authority typically refers to variants as being from the timeline branches of the Sacred Timeline, the term also refers to variants caused by changes to the timeline in other parts of the Multiverse such as the villains from two different alternate universes whose fates were changed during the Spider-Man Multiversal Crisis after being pulled into Earth-199999 by a spell gone wrong.
Variants share the same Temporal Aura as each other.
History[]
Avengers: Endgame[]
During the Time Heist, the Avengers caused the creation of several branching timelines and variants. In one timeline taking place shortly after the Battle of New York in 2012, Steve Rogers fought and defeated his own variant, who mistook Steve for Loki in disguise. Due to a mishap, the variant of Loki from that timeline was able to escape using the Tesseract.
After having captured Nebula, a variant of Thanos from 2014 brought his army to 2023 with the help of Nebula's variant. During the Battle of Earth, Nebula ended up killing her own variant. Following the battle, the variant of Gamora disappeared and Peter Quill was shown to be searching for her.
Loki[]
"Glorious Purpose"[]
Following his escape from Avengers Tower during the Time Heist, the variant of Loki Laufeyson was captured by the Time Variance Authority, who pruned Loki's timeline and nearly Loki himself before Mobius M. Mobius instead convinced the TVA to enlist Loki's help with dealing with an enemy that the organization referred to as the Variant.
"The Variant"[]
It was revealed that the Variant was actually a female variant of Loki.
"Lamentis"[]
- "I was told that everyone who works for the TVA was created by the Time Keepers."
"That's ridiculous. They're all variants, just like us."
"They don't know that." - ―Sylvie reveals the truth to Loki.[src]
The Variant revealed her name to Sylvie Laufeydottir. She also revealed to Loki that all of the TVA employees were variants rather than people created by the Time Keepers.
"The Nexus Event"[]
- "The universe wants to break free, so it manifests chaos. Like me being born the Goddess of Mischief. And as soon as that created a big enough detour from the Sacred Timeline, the TVA showed up, erased my reality, and took me prisoner."
- ―Sylvie explains her origins to Loki.[src]
In a flashback, after being captured by Ravonna Renslayer, Sylvie managed to escape.
In the present, Sylvie explained her origins as a variant to Loki. As the two developed a romantic connection as Lamentis-1 was destroyed, it created a major Nexus event that was noticed by the TVA who rescued and captured the two. After realizing what happened, an amused Mobius realized that the Nexus event had been caused by two variants of the same being forming a romantic relationship with each other which was pure chaos and enough to break reality.
At the TVA, Mobius and Hunter B-15 tried to deal with Sylvie's revelation that everyone at the TVA were actually variants rather than having been created by the Time Keepers as was previously believed. Mobius viewed the video of an interrogation where Hunter C-20 tried to convince Renslayer and the man interrogating her that they were all variants, but was cut off by Renslayer who subsequently had her killed.
After discovering the truth, Mobius attempted to help Loki escape, but was caught and pruned, but not before he wondered what his life had been before Mobius was taken by the TVA. Mobius also admitted that if he could go anywhere, it would be back to who he was before the TVA came along.
After being pruned himself, Loki awakened in the Void at the End of Time where he encountered four other Loki variants.
"Journey Into Mystery"[]
In the Void at the End of Time, Loki met four other variants of himself: Classic Loki, Boastful Loki, Kid Loki and Alligator Loki, although Loki had trouble believing that the alligator was actually a Loki variant. Despite the threat of Alioth, the Loki variants had managed to survive in the Void and revealed their Nexus event that had created the branched timelines that they were from. Later, a number of other Loki variants led by President Loki attacked the group's hideout after Boastful Loki betrayed his companions, but they ultimately all turned on each other.
Having survived as well, Mobius used a TemPad stolen by Sylvie to return to the TVA through a Time Door to reveal the truth to everyone there. As Loki and Sylvie faced off against Alioth, Classic Loki chose to sacrifice himself to buy his variants time. Although Loki had never used the power before, he was able to join Sylvie in enchanting Alioth because they were the same person and thus they shared the same powers.
"For All Time. Always"[]
Hunter B-15 revealed to Hunter D-90 the truth about everyone at the TVA being variants by taking him to see Rebecca Tourminet, Ravonna Renslayer's Sacred Timeline counterpart.
In the Citadel at the End of Time, Loki and Sylvie learned from He Who Remains of the history of the Multiversal War and He Who Remains' variants. He Who Remains warned the two that killing him would unleash the Sacred Timeline and allow countless variants of himself to return to begin the war again but, wanting revenge, Sylvie killed He Who Remains nonetheless after kicking Loki through a Time Door back to the TVA. As He Who Remains had warned, the Sacred Timeline began branching uncontrollably.
"Ouroboros"[]
The TVA's new judge's council struggled with the revelation that they were all variants and not created by the Time Keepers as had previously been believed. Ultimately, Judge Gamble chose to agree with Mobius and Hunter B-15's decision to stop pruning timelines.
After returning from the Citadel at the End of Time, Loki revealed the danger of He Who Remains' variants to everyone.
"Breaking Brad"[]
Hunter X-05 was revealed to have discovered his true identity as a variant of actor Bradley Wolfe, taking his counterpart's place on the Sacred Timeline after abandoning General Dox's mission.
"1893"[]
In 1868, Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes gave a copy of the TVA Handbook to Victor Timely, creating a branched timeline where Victor spent the next 25 years building the devices covered in the handbook with Renslayer and Miss Minutes using him for their own purposes, intending to turn Victor into a replacement for He Who Remains.
In 1893, Loki and Mobius encountered the variant of Victor Timely at the World's Columbian Exposition where Loki recognized him as also being a variant of He Who Remains. This meant that Victor shared the same temporal aura as He Who Remains which they could use to lift the lockdown on the Temporal Loom's blast doors which required a live scan of He Who Remains' temporal aura. However, Sylvie initially sought to kill Victor, seeing him as a threat, but she ultimately relented and let Loki and Mobius take him instead.
"Heart of the TVA"[]
Loki, Mobius, Sylvie, Ouroboros and Casey sought Victor Timely's help as a variant of He Who Remains to fix the Temporal Loom. When the system scanned Victor's Temporal Aura, he was identified as He Who Remains, lifting the lockdown.
"Science/Fiction"[]
Following the explosion of the Temporal Loom, all of Loki's friends were reset to their lives on their respective branched timelines from before the TVA took them. Mobius, Hunter B-15, Casey and Ouroboros were revealed to be variants of Don, Dr. Verity Willis, Frank Morris and Dr. A.D. Doug, PhD, respectively.
"Glorious Purpose"[]
- "And as you may or may not know, my variants are already out there."
"We'll find them."
"There's too many."
"I won't stop."
"Doesn't matter."
"Never stopped me before." - ―He Who Remains and Loki[src]
After failing to stop the Meltdown of the Temporal Loom, Loki traveled back in time to before Sylvie killed He Who Remains. He Who Remains revealed that the Temporal Loom was actually a failsafe intended to keep the Sacred Timeline isolated, that once it overloaded, the Temporal Loom would delete all of the new branches and destroy the TVA. He Who Remains reminded Loki that his variants were already out there and told Loki that there were too many of them for Loki and the TVA to find and stop. He Who Remains attempted to get Loki to kill Sylvie and save him so that they could keep the Sacred Timeline isolated, warning that otherwise He Who Remains' variants would come bringing a war that nothing would survive, including the Sacred Timeline.
After Loki saved the Multiverse by destroying the Temporal Loom and reshaping the branches into a Yggdrasil-like tree with his magic, the TVA dedicated itself to protecting the Multiverse and hunting for He Who Remains' variants. Mobius gave Hunter B-15 a report on Kang and his actions in the Quantum Realm, but noted that Kang had been stopped and that none of He Who Remains' variants knew about the Sacred Timeline yet.
Later, Mobius observed his Sacred Timeline counterpart Don from a distance, having decided to learn about who he was before the TVA had abducted him.
Spider-Man: No Way Home[]
During Peter Parker and Stephen Strange's attempt to erase everyone's memories of the fact that Peter was Spider-Man after his secret identity was revealed to the world by Quentin Beck, the spell went wrong due to Peter's changes to it. Instead, it began drawing in villains from two different alternate universes, who were, for the most part, pulled from just before their deaths, turning them into variants. With the help of two alternate versions of himself, who were also transported into his universe, Peter cured the villains, giving Otto Octavius a new inhibitor chip, restoring Norman Osborn back to his normal self using an anti-serum created by Peter-Two for the Goblin Formula that transformed Norman into the Green Goblin, and transforming Curt Connors back into his human form using an antidote created by Peter-Three for the Lizard Serum that transformed Connors into the Lizard while Peter-Two transformed Flint Marko back into his human form using a Particle Accelerator created by Peter-One for the supercollider that transformed Flint into the Sandman and Otto drained Max Dillon of his powers of electricity manipulation using an Electricity Siphon created by Peter-One for the accident with Bioelectric Eels that transformed Max into Electro, and sent them and their own Peters back to their universes with a chance at a different fate.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania[]
Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne, Cassie Lang, Janet van Dyne, and Hank Pym battled Kang the Conqueror, a variant of He Who Remains who had been exiled to the Quantum Realm long before by the Council of Kangs.
Following Kang's apparent death, numerous variants of Kang, led by the Council of Kangs, commiserate his demise and plan their multiversal uprising.
In 1893, Loki and Mobius M. Mobius observed Victor Timely at the World's Columbian Exposition and Loki recognized Victor as another variant of He Who Remains.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]
Since the Battle of Earth, the variant of Gamora became the leader of the Ravagers. While helping Rocket Raccoon, Peter Quill had trouble separating the variant of Gamora from his experiences with the Sacred Timeline version of her.
