Xu Shang-Chi is the son of Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings. Having been trained by the organization since childhood, he has become a master martial artist with skills that are unsurpassed by many.
Biography[]
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings[]
Shang-Chi was born in 1998 to Ying Li and Xu Wenwu. Ying Li was murdered by the Iron Gang when Shang-Chi was young and Wenwu slipped back into his life as a criminal to get vengeance, retaking control of the Ten Rings. He had Shang-Chi trained to become a master martial artist and assassin. When he was just 14 years old, Wenwu sent Shang-Chi on a mission to kill the leader of the Iron Gang. Shang-Chi completed his mission but fled to San Francisco where he adopted the name "Shaun" and went to school.
One day after years living in hiding Shaun-Chi received a mysterious postcard with an image of a dragon on it. He went to work, his job is a valet with his best friend Katy Chen. The two are content with their lives. They went to see their friends John and Soo. The two made Shang-Chi and Katy feel that they’re wasting their lives and their potential. Later on Shang-Chi and Katy hung out on their own and got drunk at a karaoke bar. The next day, Shang-Chi and Katy board a bus when they are confronted by a man who wanted Shang-Chi to give him the pendant he wear a gift from his mother. More goons try to forced him. They are led by a hulking one-handed man named Razor Fist. When one hit Katy, Shang-Chi used his incredible fighting skills that take them down with ease as Katy and the passengers watch in awe. Unfortunately, Razor Fist used his, arm-razor to slice the brakes off the bus and knockout the driver when he and Shang-Chi fought. Katy drive the bus while Shang-Chi and Razor Fist continue to fight. Shang-Chi throw out all the goons on the bus, however Razor Fist was able to take the pendant.
At Shang-Chi apartment, Katy asked Shang-Chi how he learned to fight like that and about his past. He revealed to her that his Father sent those goon. Then Shang-Chi show Katy the postcard he that he believed is from his sister Xu Xialing. They board a plane to Macau to find her, on the flight Shang-Chi explained the training he went through under the Ten Rings led by his Father, but as he realized that his father wanted him to become a killer, he chose to abandon his father’s teachings and escaped to America.
In Macau, Shang-Chi and Katy went to an underground fight club operated by Jon Jon. They watched the hero sorcerer Wong battling against The Abomination. Wong defeated Abomination by creating a portal that made Abomination to punch himself in the face and knocking him out. Shang-Chi unknowingly signed up to be next Xialing turn out to be the opponent. Shange-Chi refused to fight his sister. Xialing however beat up her brother until tap out. Shang-Chi told her that their father is coming for them and for her pendant. Xialing is resentful to Shang-Chi feeling he abandoned her. When Shang-Chi show her the postcard, Xialing said didn't sent him the card. Ten Rings assassins, attached the fight club. They are led by Death Dealer, begin to attack the place as Xialing leave Shang-Chi and Katy behind. Shang-Chi fight off the assassins. Their fight went outside the building Shang-Chi was able to fend them off the assassins than went after Katy but Xialing came back and help them, but Wenwu arrived and take Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing with him.
The three were taken to the Ten Rings compound in the mountains, where Wenwu provide his children and Katy with dinner. He wanted Shang-Chi to finally take his place as his successor to lead the Ten Rings, but Shang-Chi refuse wanted nothing to do with his father’s legacy. Wenwu also mention the fake Mandarin character from America that falsely represented him and his organization. He talk about his late wife Ying Li and how everything in his life changed for him for the better after they met, and how lost he felt when she died. Desperate to bring her back so their family could all be together again, he learned of a gate in the mountains of Ta Lo where he believed Li is trapped and want be set free. as he claimed he heard her voice calling out to him. Wenwu take Shang-Chi and Xialing’s pendants and places them in the eyes of a dragon statue, show them a water map that led to Ta Lo. After Wenwu tell them his plan is to invade Ta Lo to li back or he and the Ten Ring burn it to the ground. Shang-Chi try to convince Wenwu that his mother were gone but he refused to listen. Shang-Chi try to fight him, but his father easily defeated him then imprisoning him, Katy, and Xialing.
In their holding cell, the trio met Trevor Slattery, the former fake Mandarin who has since been captured for his impersonation, but his only company is a Dijiang he called Morris. With their help, the trio were able to escape from the cell and then steal Razor Fist’s car from the garage. They made their way to Ta Lo, the forest were closing up on the group as they drive through it, but they able to make it to Ta Lo. In Ta Lo, they found mythical creatures and beasts. The group were confronted by the villagers, they met their leader, Ying Nan, who was Li’s sister Shang-Chi and Xialing aunt. Nan explained to them that the village guard the Dark Gate where the Dweller-in-Darkness is imprison. The Dweller-in Darkness is a ancient extra-dimensional soul-sucking monster who had an army that fed on thousands. The warriors of Ta Lo were finally able to defeated it with the help of the dragon, they called the Great Protector. and they imprison the Dweller behind the gates. The Dweller were the one Wenwu were hearding not Li. The Dwelle use Li’s voice is calling out to him. Nan then take Shang-Chi and Xialing to the gift their mother left for them. Suits crafted from dragon scales. Nan tell them they have to get ready for Wenwu. Katy trained in archery, while Nan train Shang-Chi in Ta Lo fighting style, air bending fighting by using aerokinesis. The same style Li used to beat Wenwu. Nan hone his fighting skills and tell he had to accept his father to find peace. That night, Shang-Chi confess to Katy that he afraid he is no different from his father and fear he might have to kill Wenwu to stop him from hurting others. Wenwu and the Ten Rings found their to Ta Lo. The heroes and villagers all gather for battle. During the fighting, Shang-Chi battle Wenwu with a bo staff. The two fight, Wenwu used his rings senting his son into nearby lake. After he went to the Dark Gate using the ring powers bring it down, he unleashing several soul eater demons, one of which kills Death Dealer and prompted Razor Fist to work together with Xialing and Nan. The soul eater suck out more souls as fuel to release the Dweller. Meanwhile underwater, Shang-Chi encounter the Great Protector, who help him rise out brought him to the Dark Gate. Where he continue his fight with Wenwu. Shang-Chi manage to take control of the rings and finally about to beat Wenwu. Shang-Chi spare Wenwu to prove he is nothing like him. Unfortunately, the Dweller is released from its prison. Wenwu pass the rings to his son just before the Dweller consumed his soul. The monster and the soul eaters attack the village. The dragon with Xialing riding pick up Shang-Chi together they fly after the Dweller. The monster had become to powerful. Xialing almost fell off but Shang-Chi her with the rings. She told Shang-Chi to let her go or the dragon would die, because the Dweller were taking the Dragon soul but he refuses to let her go. Luckily Katy shot an arrow at the Dweller’s throat. Shang-Chi was able to blast the rings into the Dweller’s mouth that went inside of its chest. Shang-Chi used the rings powers ripping apart the Dweller destroying it once and for all.
After the battle, the survivors honor the fallen warriors. Shang-Chi honor Wenwu, praying that he found peace. They lit lanterns and send them off across the waters. Sometime after, Shang-Chi and Katy told their adventure to John and Soo, who both think the two are mocking them. Then Wong open a portal into the bar where they were having drinks. Wong asked Shang-Chi and Katy come along for another mission. The two waste no time and went with him. Shang-Chi and Katy then met Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers with Wong as they discuss that when Shang-Chi rings, The ring activated a beacon when Shang-Chi used them. Before they discovered the origins of the rings, Shang-Chi and Katy take Wong to the karaoke bar where they get drunk and sing “Hotel California”.

- In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu, and his name meant the "rising and advancing of the spirit". Shang-Chi became known for being the master of kung fu and a member of the Avengers.
